Design with Cardboard

House-ware & Furniture

Forming products and furniture in cardboard?
These life-size heavy-duty ‘paper sculpture’ could be far more functional and durable than you think ... …

Beside being a venerable workhorse of set designers in the theatre and movie business, cardboard furniture has also graced some of the world's nicest homes. Famous architect Frank O. Gehry is possibly the first to have introduced it to the design world – with his 1972 cardboard furniture collection "Easy Edges".

Nowadays, cardboard designed products and furniture are getting popular and in increasing demand!

  1. I feel that this is a clever idea to make furniture out of cardboard. It is not only eco-friendly, recycling cartons which are easily available, but practical as well which is suitable for everyday use. They also look rather sturdy and able to support heavy weight. The designs are as innovative as products or furniture made out of plastic or other types of material.

However, I think some of the bad points of these products are they could be a fire hazard and do not seem to be waterproof either.

  2. The blueprint of the residency is rather elegant. Using a spherical design instead of a regular shape for the book shelf creates a Zen yet undisrupted feel for reading. The chairs are schemed in a way that it conform to the surrounding. The light bulbs are clustered in a way that its compatible to the background. The work desk made of cardboard is rather expressive and inventive. It’s uncomplicated and has more benefits then cons to the environment. The designs of furniture using cupboard has shown the versatility of humans when it comes to creativity.

However, it's rather weak compare to the use of woods and metal as it can be easily destroy by water and fire

  4. Generally, the blueprint above conjures a simple ,contemporary and organic feel. The designer plays with the given space ,contrasting line-works, symmetrical and sculptural shapes and also variation in textures.

In my perspective, the use of wall fixtures in a dominant quantity is a brilliant way of managing and maintaining one's organization and cleanliness in a small space. The curved chairs against the strong line of the wall, intrigues me as it visually contrasting yet conforming.

I particularly love the idea of using cardboard as a substitution of the mundane. Not only that it's refreshing aesthetically ,lightweight and ergonomically structured. It is also a good approach in assisting in the constant pursuit of managing global warming, as the material used is eco-friendly.The texture is intrinsic and requires no paints or varnishes to give further enhancement.

Though,it may be vulnerable to water, fire and decay, the pros outweighs it all.
